Hosting Email

Most paid HotDoodle accounts may have email for a single domain. The email account functions like a regular email account and is stored on our server. The email ID can be unique from your HotDoodle site.

We offer a Linux based email server that does all of the standard things such as offering SMTP and POP access. We also include the Spam Assassin spam filter and a web based mail reader.

Kinds of email Accounts

There are 2 kinds of email addresses:

  • Forwarding -- This is an address where all the mail that arrives is forwarded immediately somewhere else. For example, info@mydomain.com could be forwarded to MaryJones@aol.com.  All processing, spam filtering, etc must be done in the receiving side. Email forwarding has the advantage of being very simple to set up and use. It has the disadvantage in that when you reply the replies are "from" the forwarded address.
  • True Mailbox -- This is an address where the email that arrives is stored on our servers until you read it either by the webmail interface or by an email client such as Thundirbird or Microsoft Outlook.   You have to remember to check for new emails or set your email client to do it for you, Email clients are notoriously hard to configure and many people get confused with them. HotDoodle can offer only minimal help here.   If, for example, Microsoft Outlook is confusing, you would have to get help from Microsoft.

Getting Started

The initial setup of email has to be done by HotDoodle. See Initial Setup.

After that, you can add your own accounts and access your email. See Post Setup.
