Storing Images
Important: In order to be used, images need to be sourced from a web server.
Unlike most word processors, images cannot be inserted and moved around like text phrases. The manner in which the web functions requires the image to initially be stored somewhere and when the image is needed, the text refers to the image by a reference to where it is stored. Images are not part of the web
page but are linked to a web page.
These images have to live somewhere
to be served to these web pages - some machine must respond to the
request for the image and return the right bits. Image Sourcing Options:
- You can store the image with your site on the HotDoodle web server, or
- You can reference the image where it lives on some other web server.
If you store the image with your site on the HotDoodle web server you know that the image will be there as long as you need it. Storing an image on another web server you are at risk that the other site might delete or rename the image. The main mechanism for storing images is the Picture Album and is designed to upload and show collections of possibly annotated images. As its name implies, images in an album are presented to normal users. Image galleries are ideal for showing images taken from an event such as a meeting or competition.
An obsolete approach that is still present in some sites is the Image Manager and is designed to store individually uploaded images to be used in text blocks. Image managers do not show their images to users who do not have edit privileges.
Note: Uploading to an ImageManager or ImageGallery causes the image to resize on the HotDoodle server. |
